Norman Mailer (1923-2007)
Norman Mailer, one of
America's most respected writers, passed away
recently at the age of 84. An innovator of
creative non-fiction, Mailer was twice
awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Prize and
also won the National Book award. Mailer's
debut book, The Naked and the Dead,
was hailed by many as one of the best
American wartime novels and named one of the
"one hundred best novels in English language"
by the Modern Library. His novels Armies
of the Dead and The Executioner's
Song both won Pulitzer Prizes. As he grew
older, Mailer became more known for his
counter-culture essays which led to him
becoming one of the founders of The
Village Voice. A true literary

Ira Levin (1929-2007)
Ira Levin, author of the
best-selling horror and suspense novels
"Rosemary's Baby," "The Stepford Wives" and
"The Boys from Brazil," all later made into
popular films, has died at age 78. Stephen
King has described Ira Levin as "the Swiss
watchmaker of suspense novels, he makes what
the rest of us do look like cheap watchmakers
in drugstores." Chuck Palahniuk, in Stranger
Than Fiction: True Stories, calls Levin's
writing "a smart, updated version of the kind
of folksy legends that cultures have always
used."
