Harper Lee Honored With The Presidential Medal Of Freedom
On November 5th, 2007, author
Harper Lee was
presented with the Presidential Medal of
Freedom, the highest civilian award in the
United States. According to the citation, Lee
is being honored for "an outstanding
contribution to America's literary tradition.
At a critical moment in our history, her
beautiful book, To Kill a Mockingbird, helped
focus the nation on the turbulent struggle
for equality." Lee's sole novel is considered
a footnote in literary history. It won the
Pulitzer Prize in 1961, and is ranked by the
Guinness Book of World Records as the top
selling novel of all time. It is widely
regarded by many as the greatest novel of the
20th century and is still revered to this day
as anthem for civil rights and justice in
America. Lee joined such great writers as
John Steinbeck, Carl Sandburg, Tennessee
Williams, James Michener, T.S. Eliot, and EB
White as winners of this prestigious honor.
In our opinion, there is not an author more
deserving of this honor today than Harper
Lee.
