Taking Care Of Your Books!

A question we have received a lot is "what is the best way to take care of a book?" As a bookseller for over 10 years that deals with books up to a hundred years old, managing and taking care that our books stay in top condition is one of our highest priorities. Books come in all shapes and sizes and some are more durable than others. Following the basic guidelines of environmental conditions, shelving and storage, handling and use, and cleaning and maintenance can help greatly increase the life of any and all of the books in your collection.

Books are made of a variety of materials which can be vulnerable to light, temperature, and humidity. Try to keep your books from being exposed to an excessive amount of light. High levels of ultraviolet radiation cause the most rapid deterioration and fading. Keeping the temperature constant and consistent cool is also key. Air conditioners and humidifiers are a must to remove excess heat and moisture. A cool, dry, and stable room is the most ideal environment for your library.

Making sure your books are upright, vertical, and firmly supported keeps your books straight and square. Angling books puts stress on the whole book structure and can deform the spine and joints where the covers are attached. They also should not be packed too tight on the shelf so they are not difficult to remove which can potentially cause damage. Good air circulation can prevent stagnant air pockets where condensation will collect and mold can grow. Adding mylar covers to dustjackets, a practice FlatSigned Books does for all its books, is a great preventative measure against moisture, scratching, dust, pests, etc., etc.

There are also many basic guidelines to follow when actually handling your books as to prevent accidental damage. Using clean, washed hands to avoid grime and dirt is essential. The spine is the most fragile part of the book as it is the easiest to damage and cause your book to degrade in value. Putting as little stress on it as possible such as not pulling it off the shelf from the head of the spine, cradling a book when reading instead of laying flat on table, and not putting an open book face down on a flat surface are great tips. Not eating, drinking, and smoking near a book should be basic rules as well my friends.

MARK TWAIN 1st LIFE ON MISSISSIPPI w/ Issuepoints

An incredible True First Edition of one of Mark Twain's most famous works, the largely autobiographical Life on the Mississippi! It has BOTH must-have issue-points - (1) page 441: 'present is a tail-piece depicting an urn, flames, head of Mark Twain', in subsequent states removed at the request of Mrs. Clemens who considered it morbid. (2) page 443: 'caption reads THE ST. LOUIS HOTEL', in subsequent states corrected to "The St. Charles Hotel". Very scarce to find with both points! Many regard this as THE book that earned Twain recognition as a serious writer and Twain himself once remarked that this was his favorite of all his works. A tremendous collector's item from perhaps the greatest American author in history!

A very clean, tight and solid book. Hardcover half leather with black lettering and gilt decoration. Light tattering to the spine. Square and tightly bound; previous owner writing and bookplate on front end pages. About as good condition as you can ask for such an amazing and rare collectible!
