Dear Fellow FlatSigned VIP Members And
Friends,
I was flattered and
thrilled today to be asked to write the
introduction
of our latest newsletter to everyone. Our
company president Mike Cotter
is out of town on business, so we have all
been extra busy trying to
keep everything running smoothly. My name is
Joe Arndt and I've been
working for the company for the past eight
months as an assistant to the
president in day-to-day tasks and also
helping with the auctions. It is
an honor to work for such a fine company and
to do something I truly
enjoy. Books are my passion. For me,
sometimes its hard to be both a
reader and a collector. In each book, there
is a wealth of knowledge to
unlock, a mystery to solve, an adventure to
complete, or a love story to
unfold. Sometimes, though, the story about
the book can be far more
impressive. Who wouldn't want to be the life
of the party and tell those
curious listeners how they got that first
edition, first printing of
Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" signed?
There is fascination and
wonder in the art of both reading and
collecting, to be sure.
When I was told today what the subject I'm
writing about would be, I was
enthralled. I was asked to write something
about astronauts or the space
program. Its something that brings warm,
nostalgic memories of my
childhood back to me. As the son of a father
who was in the Navy
stationed in Orlando, my family would go see
the launch and return of
the space shuttles as often as possible.
Despite the sweltering summer
or the blistering cold (hey, Floridians
aren't used to anything below
sixty degrees!), at least a hundred people
would all be standing outside
the fence with hands to their brows to shield
their eyes from the
sunlight. I was one of the fortunate few to
remember to bring a pair of
binoculars. As a child, it seemed to be
almost magic watching the ship
take off. I had visited the visitor space
center and seen how big the
shuttles were, so anything that big that
could get off the ground and
fly into space was amazing. I'm an adult now
and know a little bit more
about how the world works, and I know that
what a shuttle does isn't
actually magic, but I'll always have that
sense of wonder whenever I see
our brave American men and women pile into
that craft. That's probably
why I am so awestruck to work for a company
that's published two limited
editions of astronaut Buzz Aldrin's books. I
wasn't alive on the day
when our countrymen first stepped onto the
moon, but I can only imagine
the heart-stopping thrill of it. I am truly
glad to be alive during this
time in history, though, as we explore the
great unknowns of space. Like
our desire to collect and read rare books,
the spirit of adventure lives
in us all; granted, we don't have a payload
of 25 tons behind our chairs.
-Joe
