On Tuesday, the CIA declassified and released some 700 pages of internal reports on agency misconduct in the mid-1970s. The potential damning documents, which triggered a scandal the led to new rules and oversight for CIA, FBI, and other spy agencies, details assassination plots against foreign leaders such as Fidel Castro, the testing of mind- and behavior-altering drugs such as LSD on unwitting citizens, wiretapping of U.S. journalists, spying on civil rights and anti-Vietnam war protesters, opening mail between the United States and the Soviet Union and China, break-ins at the homes of ex-CIA employees and others. The documents were a direct product of the Watergate scandal after reports that the agency provided support to ex agents who were involved in the break in. Then-CIA Director James Schlesinger "all senior operating officials of this agency to report to me immediately on any activities now going on, or that have gone on the past, which might be construed to be outside the legislative charter of this agency." The resulting 693 pages of "skeletons" detailed an incredible amount of misconduct by the agency. President Gerald Ford and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger feared that "if they come out, blood will flow", saying: "For example, Robert Kennedy personally managed the operation on the assassination of Castro." They were then sealed til this day.

A first edition Harry Potter book fetched $18,000 at auction Tuesday. The winning bid for the first novel by J.K. Rowling that launched Pottermania went to an anonymous buyer. Bonhams auctioneers had estimated the book would sell for between $10,000 and $20,000. First editions of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" - published in the United States as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" - are valuable because of their rarity, the auction house said. The publishers produced between 500 and 1,000 copies in the book's first run. That a book that is relatively new would fetch such large amounts is unprecedented, said Luke Battenham, Bonham's book specialist. "The author is still alive, it's a fairly new series ... but by the time there was a third book, you could already see it would be a hit," Battenham said. "It's a phenomenon." The sale comes less than a month before the July 21 release of the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series. The books have sold more than 325 million copies worldwide.
