Two Great Americans: Robert F. Kennedy & Ronald Reagan
This week marks the
anniversary of the passing of two truly great
American icons, Robert F. Kennedy and
President Ronald Reagan. Though they lived in
different eras and were from opposite
political parties, both were revered and
mourned by the entire country and left a
lasting impact on our nation as a whole.
Robert Francis
Kennedy, also called RFK, born
November 20, 1925, was one of the two younger
brothers of President John F. Kennedy. He was
intensely loyal and very close
to his brother and and
served as US Attorney General from 1961 to
1964 during JFK's administration, becoming
one of his most
trusted advisors. RFK became an
ardent supporter of the African-American
Civil Rights Movement, a contribution
considered to be his greatest legacy. It was
RFK's passion and determination that helped
"The Kennedy Administration" become synonymous
with the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s.
After the tragic assassination of President
Kennedy, a moment that completely devastated
Robert and by many accounts changed him as a
man, he went on to become the Senator of New
York, and then in 1968, decided to pursue the
Presidency to continue the programs he and
his brother had originally undertaken, a
ticket of racial and economic justice,
non-aggression in foreign policy,
decentralization of power and social
improvement. Tragically, after scoring a
major victory in the California Primary that
seemingly was going to pave his way to the
Democratic Nomination, Kennedy was gunned
down in the early morning hours of June 5,
1968 at his hotel after addressing
supporters. Kennedy had a profound impact on
Civil Rights and America in general and one
cannot help but wonder what could have been
had he been able to follow in his brother's
footsteps and become President.
Ronald Wilson Reagan, the 40th President of
the United States, passed away on this day 3
years ago. At 93 years of age, he was the
second longest-lived president in U.S.
history, 45 days behind Gerald Ford.
Reagan is one of the most popular Presidents
in history and many believe that much of
America's success today can be attributed
directly to him. He was known as the "Great
Communicator", earning that title because of
his skill at talking evocatively and using
folksy anecdotes that ordinary people could
understand. Together with Mikhail Gorbachev,
he was able to help end the long Cold War and
the fear of nuclear war. Reagan stated that
his two proudest achievements as President
were expanding the economy and restoring
American morale following a time of political
setbacks and economic stagflation. Reagan was
a truly great American, who's gift for
optimism endeared him to the whole country.
FlatSigned is proud to offer a wonderful
selection of books from Reagan and Robert
Kennedy from our collection to yours.
