288 Years Ago, A Literary Classic Is Published.
Though FlatSigned has
over
30,000 rare and collectible books in its
inventory, including books SIGNED by such
literary icons as Ernest
Hemingway, William
Faulkner, John
Steinbeck, and many more,
there are still some books that we feel
absolutely amazed and privileged to have been
able to add to our collection. April 25th
marks the 288th Anniversary of the
first publication of one of those books: Daniel
Defoe's legendary fictional work The Life
and Strange Adventures of Robinson
Crusoe! The book was published in
1719 and remained the most well known and
best selling of all english novels until the
20th century! The book, about a shipwrecked
sailor who spends 28 years on a deserted
island, is based on the experiences of
shipwreck victims and of Alexander Selkirk, a
Scottish sailor who spent four years on a
small island off the coast of South America
in the early 1700s. The positive reception to
this book was almost immediate and universal
and by the end of the 19th century, no book
in the history of Western literature had
spawned more editions, spin-offs, and
translations (even into languages such as
Inuit, Coptic, and Maltese) than Robinson
Crusoe. The classic has more than 700 such
alternative versions and has been translated
to stage and film numerous times. This
literary classic has truly stood the test of
time.
FlatSigned is proud to own one
of the earliest and most beautiful copies of
this book on the market! Today, in honor of
the Anniversary of its first publication, we
are offering it to you, our VIP customers,
for nearly half the retail value! This
treasure is the centerpiece of our collection
and would most certainly be the centerpiece
of yours. More information on the piece is
available further in this newsletter.
