Presidents Day - a day to honor our nation's great leaders of the past and present.
We would like to
tell you about one of America's most influential
Founding Fathers (and our favorite), the 3rd
President of the United States, Thomas
Jefferson. Jefferson was the principal author
of the founding document of the United States
of America, the Declaration of Independence,
which declared that the Thirteen United
Colonies "are, and of Right ought to be Free
and Independent States; that they are
Absolved from all Allegiance to Great
Britain." It proclaimed that they formed a
new nation called the "United States of
America" that would "assume, among the powers
of the earth, a separate and equal station."
During his Presidency from 1801-1809, many
major events occurred: he laid the groundwork
for the Louisiana Purchase, commissioned the
Lewis and Clark Expedition, and outlawed
external slave trade. The ideals of
Republicanism in the United States, an ideal
he helped establish and promote, has
dominated American political thought since
the American Revolution.
After his Presidency, Jefferson once again
rose to help our great nation by offering to
sell his personal library as a replacement
after the British burned down the Capital and
its library in 1814. Jefferson had spent 50
years accumulating books, "putting by
everything which related to America, and
indeed whatever was rare and valuable in
every science"; his library was considered to
be one of the finest in the United States.
Jefferson wanted to create a library for
statesmen and for the people of the new
nation. In January 1815,Congress accepted
Jefferson's offer, appropriating $23,950 for
his 6,487 books, and the foundation was laid
for a great national library, which stands
today 200 years later. If ever a library had a
single founder, Thomas Jefferson was the
founder of the Library of Congress. On June
10, 1815, Thomas Jefferson wrote to John
Adams, "I cannot live without books, but
fewer will suffice where amusement, and not
use, is the only future object." Thomas
Jefferson's legacy and contribution to
America and its rich history will forever be
remembered and honored.

PRESIDENT THOMAS JEFFERSON SIGNED 1st Notes On The State Of Virginia
This is a very significant
moment at FlatSigned! I am truly proud to
offer for the first time ever from my
personal collection to yours, very rare books
by book lover and American icon, Thomas
Jefferson! We are making available two
incredible copies of his beloved "Notes on
the State of Virginia." As of today, there
are no comparable copies available anywhere
on the worldwide Internet market but for
these in my collection! These two are offered
exclusively to members of the FlatSigned

may not last long. They are unique and in
incredible, collectible condition, one of
which contains his historic signature! The
copy that bears the autograph of President
Jefferson is signed "As President", an
important and valuable distinction, and is on
a "Free Frank" from the White House, hand
signed by then President of
the United States, Thomas Jefferson. It is
available today for twenty-five thousand US
Dollars. The similar copy of this First
Edition without the autograph is available at

Book Description: Hardcover book that has
been beautifully rebound with tan and red
cloth creating an heirloom quality relic and
helping to restore and preserve its state for
years to come. The pages inside show age
toning and some primitive tape repair in the
front. Overall the pages are in good shape
considering the age! Square and tightly
bound. This is the first
English edition of Jefferson's famous work.
This is the only book-length work by
Jefferson to be published in his lifetime,
and has been called "one of America's first
permanent literary and intellectual
landmarks." The book was largely written in
1781, and was first published in Paris, in
French, in 1785. Written in the form of
answers to questions about Virginia, it
supplies a description of the geography, and
an abundance of supporting material and
unusual information. As J.M. Edelstein notes,
"Jefferson wrote about things which
interested him deeply and about which he knew
a great deal; the NOTES, therefore, throws a
fascinating light on his tastes, curiosities,
and political and social opinions." The story
of the creation of this book and its
publishing history is an interesting one. It
is told fully by Millicent Sowerby in her
catalogue of Jefferson's library, where it
occupies some thirty pages in small
type.
